VIGIA Tire Guardian has built in two safety valves to instantly shut the system down in the event of a catastrophic loss of air in one of the tires. It does this so as not to interfere with the vehicle's pneumatic system for brakes and/or suspension. In this unlikely occurrence, the driver is alerted with a series of Red LEDs.
VIGIA number one purpose is to increase Safety On The Road! It is about 80% effective in preventing tire blowouts. According to the NHTSA, most tire blowouts are caused by tires that are at least 20% under inflated. This small amount of under inflation cannot be detected by kicking or thumping the tire.
The NTSB has issued a Safety Alert for Passenger Vans and the dangers associated with rollover accidents caused by tire blowouts. It has attributed the majority of these accidents to under inflated tires.
VIGIA Tire Guardian cannot prevent ALL tires from blowing out. Some blowouts are caused by defective tires and sometimes by bald tires with a load that is too heavy for the vehicle. However, by keeping tires properly inflated, even after a road hazard has been picked up in mid-journey, VIGIA Tire Guardian can prevent most blowouts. For this reason, the system has been used around the world to keep drivers and others on the roads safe from flying tire debris and out-of-control vehicles. (See ATP Not just for Trailers).
Fleets are adopting Automatic Inflation Systems primarily for their economic benefits. Typically, the installation of a system brings a payback in much less than a year. (ROI NM143.xls) Properly inflated tires deliver real, tangible economic benefits such as longer life to the tires, better fuel economy and the recovery of casings for retreading.
There are less tangible economic benefits to installing VIGIA Tire Guardian as well. Often, a heavy vehicle that has been sitting for a period of a few days can lose 10% or even 20% of its pressure-just from sitting! Once the vehicle is started for the first time after sitting, the VIGIA Tire Guardian will switch on to reinflate the tires up to the calibrated pressure. This function eliminates the need for a mechanic or driver to check tire inflation before each trip. Think of the man-hours that can be saved by not having to check tire pressure any more.
No one can predict when a road hazard will be picked up by one of the tires on the vehicle. However, once this happens, we can predict the cost. The average road service call for a flat tire is $250.
There are, of course, other non-tangible benefits to installing VIGIA Tire Guardian. What is the cost to a freight company if they have a time-sensitive load sitting on the side of the highway, waiting for a service truck?
What is the cost to a transit company if they have a load of passengers not arriving at their destination on time due to a flat tire?
